The Black Charter path

Unavailable at character creation. Discover the brokers, earn a Black Charter, and choose whether to sign.

The Obsidian Directorate is Aster Reach’s seventh faction: a malevolent corporatocracy enforced by the Order of the Black Seal. It exists as an NPC antagonist from the outset. Players begin in one of the six civic factions and may later earn an invitation to its pirate service. It is never an initial character-creation choice, random assignment, or onboarding correction option.

Owner direction establishes the seventh antagonist, progression into pirate membership, and special abilities. The name, rank structure, ability designs, consequences, and tuning below are proposals. They are represented in the creative atlas, not implemented in the MMO.

Never a starting choice

The Directorate is an antagonist from the outset. It is not offered at character creation, never assigned at random, and never used as an onboarding correction.

The promise, and the lie

Public doctrine: “Everything has an owner.” Recruitment promise: “They ask you to belong. We offer you command.”

The Directorate converts essential services into leverage. It engineers shortages, offers relief with predatory terms, and deploys its order when settlements resist. Its charter-houses are the shareholders of a state; the Charter Board holds executive power, while the Black Seal gives that power military force and ritual legitimacy. Its disciplined ranks, personal ambition, secretive instruction, and seductive promotions provide the dark-order fantasy. Its power remains grounded in Aster Reach’s technology and math-driven action.

Executive-Marshal Severin Voss is its featured male figure. He treats terror as a calculated operating expense. First Creditor Lucan Vey prefers dependency that pays over time. Their disagreement is about the efficient exercise of domination; neither is a secretly benevolent reformer.

The Black Charters license frontier pirate crews to intercept, smuggle, and seize under corporate sponsorship. Those crews are useful precisely because the Board can disavow them. Players can become feared privateers and eventually earn a commission into the order. Advancement brings actual tactical options while exposing how thoroughly the organization owns the conditions of that advancement.

Five stages of entry

Nothing here signs itself. Reading the dossier, taking a broker’s message or reaching a standing threshold commits you to nothing.

Unlisted contact

Finish normal first flight, find a frontier broker, knowingly accept an introductory outlaw job.

Discover the faction. Keep the original allegiance and ability.

Bonded runner

Complete varied witnessed NPC smuggling, salvage, and interception contracts.

Earn standing and a charter invitation. No automatic membership.

Charter corsair

Complete an NPC convoy trial and explicitly sign at a safe service point after reviewing consequences.

Change active allegiance to Obsidian and unlock Writ of Seizure.

Black Seal adept

Complete an advanced piracy/escape arc and deliberately accept an order commission.

Unlock Ghostwake as an alternative equipped allegiance ability.

Warrant marshal

Complete a command/interception arc through verified varied work.

Unlock Debt Lance as a third option and earn ceremonial rank.

Do not gate admission on killing players or attacking friends. NPC contracts provide a complete route. PvP contracts can later contribute through the same authoritative legal-target and reward rules. Exact standing thresholds and time requirements remain open; avoid an arbitrary grind disguised as identity.

Signing copy: “Join the Obsidian Directorate?” Show the replaced ability, changed access, proposed public allegiance, and available exit route before a deliberate “Sign Black Charter” action. A separate “Keep my allegiance” action declines without discarding ordinary progression. Merely viewing the dossier, accepting a broker’s message, reaching a standing threshold, or receiving an invitation never signs anything.

Three proposed powers

One equipped allegiance ability, shared with the six starting societies. Joining replaces the one you had; it never adds a second slot.

Writ of Seizure

Stationary, visible channel that temporarily reduces throughput on one exposed hostile supply connection.

Break the caster’s position, range, line of sight, or operating state. No cargo theft/deletion, sanctuary effect, ownership transfer, or permanent chain suppression.

Ghostwake

Clear eligible hostile tracking marks on the caster and briefly resist their reapplication.

Direct sight, normal targeting, committed hits, weapons, gates, and barriers remain effective. This is tracking disruption, not invisibility.

Debt Lance

The next valid successful math attack redirects a bounded part of its existing damage through shields into hull.

Telegraph the arming; ordinary range, sight, target eligibility, and attack commit still apply. Total damage is unchanged, and shieldless targets give no added benefit.

There is one equipped allegiance ability, shared across the six starting affiliations and Obsidian. Joining replaces the current starter ability. Unlocking a second or third pirate option does not add a second or third active faction slot. Change the equipped option at an eligible safe port under published restrictions. Ship-role abilities remain separate; all use the approved math-earned personal charge budget.

Ghostwake depends on a defined tracking-mark system. If that system is absent, defer the ability rather than quietly turning it into stealth or an escape from committed damage. Debt Lance depends on the authoritative shield/hull attack model; it does not damage structure defenses or bypass siege stages. All powers need declared costs, durations, range, cancellation/refund semantics, family caps, and readable effect feedback before implementation.

Rank grants access to tactical alternatives and stories. It grants no hidden permanent damage multiplier, passive income, easier math, extra faction slots, or paid combat advantage. Being the malevolent faction does not excuse an objectively superior faction choice.
