Obsidian Directorate
The militant corporatocracy · Dominion
Everything has an owner.
The Black Ledger Reach
Disrupt one exposed enemy supply link while you hold position.
Seizure dreadnought and mobile charter court
Earned pirate allegiance
Anything that cannot defend its claim belongs to someone who can.
The Obsidian Directorate predates the Long Silence. Its predecessor charter-houses financed transit infrastructure, shelter reactors, and the machines that kept distant settlements alive. When communications failed, local directors declared the missing central authority in default. They seized the systems they had financed and converted emergency contracts into permanent claims. Where the six societies found reasons to share a world, the Directorate found an opportunity to own it.
The Charter Board governs through voting control of the great houses. The Order of the Black Seal enforces its writs: executive-marshals and disciplined adepts who treat command as both a corporate appointment and a rite of personal domination. They cultivate ambition, reward ruthless competence, and make a recruit’s first promotion feel like freedom. Each rank places another person’s future beneath the recruit while tightening the Board’s hold above them.
Their frontier pirates sail under Black Charters. The Directorate supplies restricted equipment, covert ports, and contracts, then disavows crews whose capture would be inconvenient. Its malevolence is deliberate: engineered shortages, fraudulent claims, exemplary seizures, and protection sold against threats it helped create. The promise of power is real; the claim that power will make the recruit independent is the lie.
You call it a home. I call it an asset no one has secured.
The argument they have not settled
Can a pirate rise through the machinery of ownership without becoming another owned instrument?
A custom of theirs
At the Closing of Accounts, the Order recites newly acquired claims while names of displaced communities are replaced by asset numbers. A new adept receives a seal of authority and signs the record of the first community placed beneath it.
Two voices
- Executive-marshal of the Black Seal
- Severin Voss — A silver-haired commander in immaculate armored tailoring. Voss never raises his voice to announce a seizure. He believes that fear, applied precisely, is cheaper than negotiation and that mercy without a return is a governance failure.
- First creditor of the Charter Board
- Lucan Vey — A patient financier who prefers a settlement indebted for decades to one broken in a day. He contests Voss’s expense and waste, never the population’s right to be free. Together they make cruelty an argument about efficiency.
Work they will ask you to do
Unlisted cargo
A quiet broker offers a delivery the public route boards do not carry.
After normal first flight, discover a frontier broker and opt into a bounded NPC smuggling contract. The job reveals its criminal sponsor before acceptance.
The Directorate becomes a known faction. Contact grants neither membership nor an ability.
A debt called shelter
A relief shipment bears the same supplier seal as the raiders who caused the shortage.
Trace the staged shortage through salvage and authorized interception jobs; choose whether to take further broker work or bring the evidence back.
The player sees the corporation’s deliberate exploitation before being asked to join it.
The Black Charter
Voss offers a privateer’s warrant and a place beneath the Black Seal.
Complete a charter trial against an NPC convoy, review allegiance and conflict consequences at a safe service point, then explicitly sign or refuse. PvP is not required to unlock the path.
Signing changes active allegiance and unlocks Writ of Seizure as the first proposed pirate ability. Refusal preserves ordinary progression and leaves another story route open.
When the signals came back
Every answer becomes an obligation.
Severin Voss moves to own the reopened connections. The Directorate offers fast repairs and protected passage, then converts dependence into exclusive charters and seizure rights.
The Order of the Black Seal sends an intermediary with the right component before its rivals can supply one. The offer carries exclusive service authority, prescribed cargo priorities, and a default clause. Militant enforcement follows contested noncompliance. Its promise of certainty attracts frightened officials and ambitious pirates; its purpose is to make a working frontier profitable to own.
What they heard
A recovered financing notice identifies equipment a predecessor charter-house once funded. A current distress call reveals which endpoint lacks a critical part. Voss pairs them in a broadcast that presents a disputed historical lien as an unquestionable present command.
Where it puts them in conflict
Lucan Vey favors a long dependency over a costly public seizure. Voss prefers a visible punishment that intimidates other endpoints. Their dispute is about efficient domination. Neither is the population’s advocate. Charter crews discover that priority berths and sponsor protection also let the Directorate dictate which calls they may answer.
Final Claim
An immense corporate warship carries acquisition courts, armored impound bays, and the Black Seal’s command apparatus. A smaller freighter held inside its capture gantries makes the hierarchy of ownership visible from the harbor.
How they sound
- Welcome
- Your name has reached the right ledger.
- Setback
- The loss is recorded. Correct it.
- Oath
- My claim is my command.
What they sound like
64–80 BPM; low bowed metal, controlled sub-bass, rigid percussion, and an unresolved descending three-note motif. Ceremony is precise and expensive. The brief is ominous original science fiction, not a pastiche of an existing film theme.
Wearing it
Allegiance shows in finish, markings and the words a society uses for its own things. It never shows in a stat.
Executive seizure — obsidian panels, narrow oxblood warrants, contract-ivory serial blocks, restrained brass fittings.
Three descending ledger bars enclosed by a warrant-red square on obsidian ink.
A cold metal Black Charter seal bearing the player’s chosen call sign, not a real-money obligation.
Charter Corsair · Black Seal Adept · Warrant Marshal
How they name things
Ownership, writs, accounts, and command. Reserve 'Black Seal' for the military order; 'Black Charter' names a pirate’s commission.
- Ships
- Prior Claim · Final Notice · Hostile Acquisition

The look, and what it refuses
Black glass, polished basalt, matte armored cloth, burnished brass, restrained oxblood light. Closed square masses, inspection gantries, elevated executive galleries, controlled entrances, anonymous seized freight.
Deliberately not: glowing swords, supernatural mind control, familiar franchise masks, skull wallpaper, racial villain coding, or making forced servitude look benign.
